Sorry to be so preachy, but I really hate the way that misinformation spreads around. (Milani used to have it on their bottles of polish, you'd think a polish company would know better, but I guess not. They seem to have only recently made the change. Sheesh.)

But on to the subject of finding actual thinner in stores IRL, the only places I've seen it have been actual beauty supply stores, or places like Trade Secret. (Not sure if Ulta carries it. ETA: It does, I saw Seche Restore there today) Sally's Beauty Supply stores are fairly common, and they do carry Beauty Secrets and Orly brand thinners.

I got a bottle of Seche Restore (the one Scrangie mentions for reviving dead polish, it's the one with toluene in it, the ingredient needed for this purpose.) at Trade Secret years ago, but haven't seen it IRL since then. Other nail polish thinners don't have toluene, so they don't work as well for reviving dead polish. (The issue really is that in recent years most companies have gone what they call 'big 3 free', which means they don't have some of the solvents that they used to use, and toluene is one of them. I'm not sure I understand the need for such a switch for every product out there, but apparently it's the modern trend. I do tend to get a bit exasperated when people ramble on about the evil of chemicals, without any working knowledge of science, but I guess that's a rant for another day, LOL!)

I've made a habit of shopping for polish online because it's pretty much the only way to get the colors/brands I want with any hope of dependability. The way I see it, the prices are so much lower that it offsets the cost of shipping, though I guess you do have to be careful where you shop.

I know that I REALLY shouldn't add nailpolish remover to nailpolish and haven't done that in years, but when I did it was my only choice when all my nailpolishes were unusable.

I tried to look for nail polish thinners but it seems they have absolutely none here. I didn't check the really expensive department store though. They might have some there. It seems this place hasn't even heard of nail polish thinners. I live in Finland and sadly those stores you mention can't be found here. So my nail polishes will have to wait a little bit and I'll have to use the ones that aren't so hardened yet.

And to another question: Are there matte nail polishes? Or maybe I should call them nail colours as the "polish" part does give the idea that they would add shine. I've seen some that say "matte" but I haven't found one that would differ much from the normal polishes. (I haven't had a very big budget though.)
I like having my nails done but I don't necessarily need them to look super glossy. I would rather have the look of slightly cloudy beige or a bit lighter than natural nails cream colour polish with the shine that nails normally have without polish, not the glass shine most polishes have.

And to another question: Are there matte nail polishes? ...

Oh, I'm sorry, I hadn't realized that you were in a different part of the world. (Get me started talking polish and, wow, can my focus narrow down, LOL!)

Are there not any beauty supply stores of any kind? I'm not sure how such things work in Europe. In the US (and Canada and the UK, though my experience of such things is limited), there are beauty supply stores that are open to the public, i.e., you don't have to have a professional cosmetology license to shop there. (though I think they are pretty careful about selling some chemicals/technical products to the non-licensed, just from the standpoint of safety, I suppose)

Basically the only place I've ever seen nail polish thinner is in stores that specialize in selling haircare, manicure and makeup stuff. Either the ones that are rather starkly focused on providing supplies to people who do hair and nails for a living, or the ones that sell more upscale hair and nail care stuff to the general public. If you don't have those in Finland, I'm not sure what to suggest. Maybe talk to the people who own the shops where manicures are done? Maybe they could order you some? (And if they tell you to just use remover, run away very fast, LOL!)

What about shopping online? I don't know about the online beauty supply options available overseas, though. I know that the US has gotten pretty strict about shipping certain chemical/potentially dangerous products, requiring retailers to ship by ground, not by air.

I'm sorry that you have to deal with this frustration, but do remember to just save your best beloved dried out polishes, maybe someday you'll find some Seche Restore and can enjoy them again.

I have never done a salon-pedicure, but have a great 'recipe' for a home-pedicure that will resurrect dry, nasty heels, if y'all want it... I'm about due for that little pampering myself.

It's ok not to take note that I live on the other side of the globe since I haven't really specified before where I am from.

I don't know of any beauty supply stores over here and they tend to be quite strict about this sort of things here, only selling bulk to those who use the stuff in their businesses. There is however a shop that specialises in beauty products, so not just a department store makeup section, but I have no idea when I would be going there next. So I guess online is where I need to be heading for looksies now.

Thanks for trying to help anyway.

Oh, oops, missed out on the 'are there matte polishes' question:

Yes, there are lots of them available, high and low end. It was something of a trend a few seasons ago, so a lot of companies now have at least a matte top coat.

The most common one I know of is Orly's Nails for Males, a clear polish that's not too shiny, just to give a clean/finished look.

There are actual matte polishes, i.e., with color, too. Kind of depends on the brand how many there are.

Definitely worth exploring IRL.

Are you talking about our banned resident foot specialist, his recipe???? I KNOW you aren't talking about the one you have the coveted picture of, on your computer.

I will have to take a look at some stores if I can find some then, now that I know they do exist.

BTW I found online that there should be nailpolish thinners sold even in the department store where I looked, but apparently they just didn't have it then. The only brand they have is Mavala. I'll have to check their other store soon.

Ocelan, I would be more than happy to pick up some nail thinner for you and send it on. We can figure out shipping very easily and if you have paypal, I could have it on it's way to you within a few days.

Thanks! I'll have a look in the beginning of next week at the store where they should have the thinners I looked at online but if they don't have it there either, I would like the "outside help" you're offering. I do have Paypal.

I'm seriously jealous now, I hear Mavala is excellent, but I've never had much access to their products.

Their purple polish Flashy Violet is really gorgeous, someone on LHC has it as a mani in their avatar picture. (Can't access my LHC account to remind myself who it was, but still, very pretty.)
