I have slipped a little with my diet. I ate lots of cake this weekend. My scale says 2 pounds more but I also have been working out and using 5 pound hand weights. Could I be gaining muscle? How long do you need to work out to actually gain muscle?

Muscle begins developing as soon as you begin working out. If you have been on the weights for a couple of weeks it is entirely possible, although cake is not the best muscle-building food!

I weigh every morning. I find my weight can vary by as much as 4 pounds morning to morning. I don't worry about variations in a couple of pounds; I look for for the trend over time to reflect my actual loss or gain.

Yes George I know you are correct about weight fluctuation. I am moving it more and more and doing crunches and leg work on the floor. I have been doing some sort of dance stair step things. What I am trying to do is keep moving for 30 minutes. I then procede to hand weights. I know I should not weigh myself every morning. Thanks for the quick reply.

I have become a fat woman. 197.2 pounds this morning at only 5'7". My ideal is around 135. I'll be happy to get back down to 150.

Right now I'm printing out the daily menu plan from SparkPeople and following it as closely as I can, substituting when necessary, exchanging like things for like things, like starches for starches, and so forth. I've been trying to get into this routine for more than a month, but I keep losing focus. I told myself this morning that I will try stepping on the scale every morning to re-focus my attention on my goal. Otherwise I go through days of mindless eating before I get my focus back.

Today was a new start, with 50 minutes of low-impact step aerobics this morning and so far so good on the eating plan.

Good job Spidermom starting a new lifestyle is always the first step. I do a sorta step aerobic with the bottom step here at the house. I turn on some music and step up and down swinging my arms for about 20 minutes.

looking at your pic from the back, Spidermom, I would never guess you at 197. More like 130's.
Just a few xtra pounds on me and I just blow up. I cannot carry weight well at al. Blech.

On Saturday night I had a pizza and quite a bit to drink (as in two pints of perry, a glass of Morgan's and Sprite and a vodka and orange juice, spread out from dinner at about 5:30 through to about 11 in the evening). Buut I went swimming with my friends in the afternoon for a couple of hours, wandered around town for a while because my friend had forgotten her watch at the pool, and spent several hours that evening skanking (which is, apparently, the term for dancing to ska music). In my reasoning, this evens out

I left my daughter at the airport this morning. She's making a trip to Ecuador to participate in a solar panel installation at an organic farm. Yesterday I looked up news in Ecuador on CNN and spent the evening in helpless, "I'm worried sick" nibbling. I've been fighting doing the exact same thing this morning. For me, food is a drug.

Jumping in to say that dieting is hard work. I jot down on a calendar what I eat daily. Just my 2 cents.
