I use a braun silk-epil epilator everywhere that i remove hair (im not sure on model, but it was about £20 new) and never get irritation - i much prefer it to shaving and will never go back.

Make sure your pits are totally dry so that the little tweezers can grab on better and use a slow setting (i know it is tempting to whizz over on the fast setting and get it over with!), make sure you make good contact with the skin. The follicles which have been plucked can stay 'open' for a couple of days afterwards so can get infected and red, I always rub in some virgin coconut oil straight after and never even get any redness
